UK Visit Visa Checklist 2026: Documents You Actually Need

A no-fluff breakdown of the financial, employment and travel-history documents that decide your UK visit visa outcome.

The UK Standard Visitor Visa is decided almost entirely on paper. The Entry Clearance Officer (ECO) spends 8 to 12 minutes on your file, so every document must answer a specific question: can you afford the trip, will you return, and is your stated purpose genuine.

Financial evidence is the single biggest factor. Submit 6 months of personal bank statements stamped by the bank, with a closing balance that comfortably covers your stay (a rule of thumb is GBP 100 to 150 per day plus flights and hotels). Avoid large unexplained deposits in the 3 months before applying, they get flagged as 'funds parked for the visa'.

Employment proof should include an original employer letter on letterhead stating your role, salary, joining date, leave approval dates, and a sentence confirming your job is held for you. Self-employed applicants need business registration, 2 years of tax returns, and 6 months of business bank statements.

Travel history matters more than people realise. Two or three prior visits to Schengen, USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, or Singapore in the last 5 years dramatically increases approval odds. If you have none, compensate with stronger ties: property documents, dependants, ongoing education, or a long employment tenure.

Finally, the cover letter ties everything together. One page, plain English, structured as: who you are, why you want to visit, who is funding the trip, what you will do day by day, and why you will return. Skip emotional language. ECOs reward clarity, not enthusiasm.
